Beyond the Weekend: Saved
Your Past, Present, and Future Rescue
The word "saved" gets used a lot in church. But what does it really mean to be saved?
In this series, we look at how salvation works. It's not just something that happened to us in the past. It's something God is doing in us right now, and something he will finish one day.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The War Within

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2
With a gentleness that only comes from time spent with Jesus, John calls his audience friends. Writing in his old age to house churches near Ephesus, he addresses a community in crisis: some members have fallen away, deny Jesus as Lord, and now treat believers with hostility (1 John 2:18–23). John reassures them of their salvation, both present and future—they are God's children, and nothing can take away his love. Still, these fractured relationships reveal a deeper truth: the war within still rages, and sin still causes harm. Someday, Jesus will return and make all things right. Until then, John points them to the hope of glorification.
The problems outside ourselves remind us of the problems that exist within ourselves. Our hearts are still sinful, even as we grow more like Jesus each day. No matter how long we've followed him, sin still creeps in—habits and reactions that don't match what we believe. Salvation isn't finished the moment we believe. It begins when we trust Christ, shapes every day that follows, and won't be complete until he returns. When we feel discouraged by this ongoing battle, God invites us to remember where our salvation is headed. The promise of glorification motivates our sanctification. One day, we will be with Jesus, we will be like him, and the war in our hearts will end.
