A Deep Question

TODAY'S MESSAGE
John the Baptist has been calling the people to turn from their ways and lean into God. The crowds respond and begin to congregate around John. Some even become John’s disciples. But John knows he’s only preparing the way. One day, as Jesus walks by, John identifies him as the Lamb of God. Two of John’s disciples begin to follow Jesus. That’s when Jesus asks them, “What are you after?”
Jesus’s question is significant for us today too. We are all seeking something. But sometimes we don’t even know what we need. Jesus does know though. He knows what the two disciples need, and he knows what we need. We might think we need a new job, our spouse to shape up, the sickness to go away, the right house, a better friend or our kids to behave. But God often works in the messiness of life to help us grow. Sometimes the things we so desperately want to change are the very things to foster the most growth.
The great thing about Jesus is that he helps us change what we want. He spends about three years pouring into the disciples' lives to help them want the right things. He’s no less committed to us. He’s given us the Bible, the Holy Spirit and the church community to help us want the right things.
IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY
Reflect on whether you think you even know Jesus well enough to know what to want. Consider spending the summer getting to know Jesus better. The Bible’s Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are four accounts of Jesus’s life (also known as the gospels). They consist of 89 chapters in total. If you read a chapter each day this summer, you’ll complete all four and discover what it means to “come and see” Jesus.
