TODAY’S MESSAGE
By the end of our stories, it’s Thursday night, and Jesus will be dead by sundown on Friday. The gospel writer, Mark, has slowed down his fast-paced account of Jesus’s life to key in on this last week. The stories we look at this week begin with Jesus’s anointing and end with his arrest. The events Mark recounts may be familiar to many of us. The risk of familiarity is that their meaning loses impact in our lives. This week, we’ll look at three interactions Jesus has and their meaning for our lives.
One of the big takeaways for us this week is that Jesus understands what we are going through. We aren’t alone. Jesus experienced the things we experience. We see that he was overwhelmed, alone and betrayed. The crazy thing is he knew it was coming and didn’t run from it. His love for us compelled him to walk into the pain, the abandonment and the shame. He did it for us. These three interactions help us get to know Jesus better, like him more, pray prayers of greater honesty and have a deeper appreciation that he went through it for us.
