Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34
Listen: Mark 8
Jesus had some shocking news for those who believed he was the Messiah. Following him didn’t include picking up a sword and taking revenge on the Romans. Instead, it involved picking up a cross (a Roman method of execution) and denying what they wanted. Jesus didn’t come to kick out the Romans. He came to invite them into his family. The two priorities couldn’t be more opposite.
When we decide to follow Jesus, we’re beginning a life of new priorities. Following the example of Jesus himself—we let go of our plans, dreams and desires. We let go of everything. This means that our life is now to be characterized by things like serving, giving and telling others of the good news of Jesus. It’s a life that gives up my concerns in exchange for God’s concerns.
Memorize Mark 8:34b today. Refer back to it regularly to remind you of the life to which Jesus calls you.
