Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. Proverbs 16:24 (NLT)
Read: Proverbs 16:24 (NLT)
Listen: Proverbs 16
Yesterday we examined if our words are honest because the truth gives our God delight. However, that doesn’t mean every honest word should be spoken. Our verse today talks about the potential our words have to influence others. It compares kind words to honey. Used for a long time as a remedy for a variety of physical problems, honey can heal. Our words are equally powerful.
We decide how we will use every piece of information every day. We should ask ourselves, “What is the kind thing to do with this information?” Will we lift someone up or weigh them down? We should ask and answer that question before we speak, especially before a difficult conversation. Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff Manion talks about using kindness in difficult conversations.
Some of us find ourselves somewhere between these two options. We don’t tear people down with our words—but we also keep encouraging words to ourselves. We miss great opportunities to be used by God when we keep an encouraging word to ourselves. We can use our kind words as a gift to others.
Find someone today to speak a kind and encouraging word. It might feel a bit uncomfortable if you don’t do this often. But step out and watch how God uses your words to cheer and build another up.
