TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Do not brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring. Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth—a stranger, not your own lips. Proverbs 27:1-2 (NLT)

The writer of this proverb is addressing the issue of bragging or boasting. He does it by focusing on two types—bragging about the future and bragging about yourself. He first wants the readers to understand that they don’t really know what the future will bring. He also wants them to recognize that it isn’t humble to brag about yourself.

Social media is one place we have optimal opportunity to both brag and exaggerate our successes. We post perfectly posed pictures and witty captions and often ignore or minimize our failures. We continually present ourselves in the best possible light on social media, but also in regular conversations. But what if it is “not our job” to portray ourselves in the best possible light?

This proverb gets right to the heart of this struggle and encourages us to be humble with our words. When our insecurities drive us, we cannot serve those we speak with well. Humility with our words is not just a recipe for being well-liked. It is a vital part of using our words to serve others better.

As you go through your day, reflect on your posts and conversations. Ask yourself, “Do I present myself accurately? Is my tendency to brag and exaggerate?” Then consider how you can use your words to present yourself more accurately and serve others well.
