“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” Luke 10:41-42a
Read: Luke 10:41-42a
Listen: Luke 10
Imagine that moment after Martha spoke. Everyone in the room could feel her frustration but were probably shocked by her words directed toward Jesus. She accused him of not caring about her feelings and tried to tell him what to do to help her. All eyes are on Jesus. Would he get angry with Martha? Would he scold Mary for leaving her sister to work alone? Or would he respond some other way?
Choosing his words very carefully, Jesus speaks with compassion instead of anger. He repeats her name as a tender moment and not a slap on the wrist as he begins his gracious response. To those in the room, his compassion may have been just as shocking as her outburst. But Jesus demonstrates the heart of God at this moment. God is gracious, tender and loving to Martha—and to us too.
Each of us can think of times when we did things that we wish we could take back. We can think of times when our choices hurt those around us. Many times, we beat ourselves up about our mistakes. Sometimes, we might think God is angry with us, and we need to earn his favor back. Today’s verses remind us that God is gracious and tender. He loves us despite our sin and invites us to what is better.
Spend some time today in confession and gratitude to God. Begin with a prayer where you admit to him the things you have done which have hurt others. Then end with a prayer thanking him for being gracious toward you and loving you despite your sin.
