TODAY’S MESSAGE

All our body parts are needed. If we were just one big eye, we couldn’t hear, smell or walk. Paul needed to make this point to the Corinthian Christians who were caught up in feeling superior with their impressive “up-front” abilities of service. Their condescending attitude of “I don’t need you” toward those who served behind the scenes was unloving and divisive.

Serving the body of Christ is not about “me.” It’s about God, Jesus and growing his body (the church). For you to use your God-given gifts the way he intends, “I need you and you need me.”

For example, in Discovery Village (our children’s ministry), the storytellers need a myriad of other volunteers such as soundboard, room parents, room cleaners, curriculum prep, small group leaders, and greeters. Each role is overlapped and enhanced by the other.

We may be gifted differently, but we need each other to serve God well. Nobody is everything and nobody is nothing. Our effectiveness and personal growths are interdependent with the gifts of our fellow believers.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

With a humble heart pray, “Father, thank you for the hundreds of people serving behind the scenes at our church. Help me not to think more highly of those I see upfront but to remember those who work behind the scenes to make my own growth and ministry possible.” As you head to church this week, notice those in ordinary roles and thank them for their service.
