I Must Ignore Deceptive Voices

January 03|Unwanted Space Series
Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have.” Jeremiah 29:8
Listen: Jeremiah 29
The voices of the “prophets and diviners” in Babylon were saying exactly what the Israelites wanted to hear. “Hey, don’t worry about it. Your captivity is going to end soon. It’s only going to be a couple of years. Then you’ll be headed back home.” But what they were saying wasn’t true. They were lies, possibly being told in order to start a rebellion. The captivity (for their disobedience) was going to last 70 years. Just as God has said (Jeremiah 29:10).
Living in unwanted space can make deceptive voices sound so good. “Get out of there as quick as you can. Don’t let her get away with that! How can you let him do that to you? You’ve got to do something.” Not only do we hear these voices—we often want to hear them. They feed our ego even though they lead us away from God and what he’s trying to do in our lives.
Because we’re never immune to this, we need to be proactive in our response. If you sense you are starting to listen to some deceptive voices, raise the issue with your small group or a trusted friend. If you’re not in a small group, new groups start in just a few weeks.
