But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Read: Galatians 5:22-23
Listen: Galatians 5
Reviewing some passages from this year’s Bible Memory Practice, we look back at the verses we memorized in March. In Galatians 5:22-23, we see some specific work God desires to do to grow us to be more like Jesus through the fruit of the Spirit.
Paul visits Galatia and establishes new churches during a missionary journey. After he leaves, legalistic teachers insist that the new believers should follow Old Testament law in order to be saved. Paul writes to this church to counter these claims and reminds them salvation is simply faith in Jesus Christ. Paul then teaches how the power of God through the Holy Spirit will empower them to grow more like Jesus.
This is the context we find the fruit of the Spirit. Paul picks traits Jesus-followers should display. But rather than a to-do list to earn God’s favor, these are things the Spirit will grow in us. We don’t develop these on our own by trying to be a “good Christian.” Instead, the Spirit produces these virtues in our lives as we allow God to be in charge of our entire lives.
A way to help you memorize Scripture is to practice it aloud with a friend or family member. This practice of sharing the verse with others reminds us that Scripture memory isn’t just for us—but a way for God to use what we’re learning to help another. Share Galatians 5:22-23 with a friend or family member today. Tell them why the verses are significant for you.
