Proverbs 4 is part of the nine lessons that open the book (Proverbs 1-9). It contains the fourth, fifth and six lessons. The lessons include a focus on the family’s history of wisdom, choosing the path of wisdom and the way of righteousness.

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The book of Proverbs begins with a caution. It’s as if King Solomon is grabbing his son by the shoulders and leaning in to impress upon him the most vital statement of his life, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10).

Wisdom is impossible unless you have a healthy fear (or understanding) of God’s character, works and power. Solomon’s collection of proverbs rests on this foundation: God, who has always existed, created this world and us. He is all-powerful to judge, save, and give and sustain life. He deserves our utmost honor and respect. True knowledge and wisdom come from knowing and believing this.

Our world is full of knowledge, especially with the internet and many modes of high-tech communication. But wisdom is scarce without the foundation of godly respect and faith. “Hold on to [godly] instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” (Proverbs 4:13). This week, we will see that fear of the Lord is not being afraid of him but is defined by worship, obedience and new life.
