“Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Mark 10:15
Read: Mark 10:13-16
Listen: Mark 10
As Jesus continues on his way, some parents bring their children to him (an action to box today) for a blessing. Appalled, the disciples rebuke them. Children had zero status in that culture. In the hierarchy of people, they weren’t even on the totem pole. Children were considered a burden until big enough to work and help support the family.
Jesus’ response to the disciples is unheard of. He not only rebukes them but says, “The kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Mark 10:14). These children have come to Jesus with nothing. They can only offer pure hearts of trust. So he takes them in his arms and responds to that trust by giving a blessing.
Jesus says that’s how everyone should approach him. It’s not about impressive resumés and glowing good deeds to earn his favor. We bring nothing—he brings everything. When we humbly sacrifice our egos and self will and accept what he did for us on the cross, Jesus freely takes us into his Kingdom. As he demonstrates with the children, Jesus responds to a cross-shaped status and a trusting heart. Watch this video clip where Pastor Jeff Manion explains how we should approach God.
On page 94 of your journal, write down a list of you tend to approach God with. Then put an X over your list and write a prayer of thanksgiving to Jesus for accepting you without that list.
