March 12|Closing the Gap Series
The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” 2 Kings 4:1
Read: 2 Kings 4:1-2
Listen: 2 Kings 4
A widow faces a dire situation. She’s lost her companion and provider. She has no means to close the financial gap, and now she could lose her children, too. She boldly asks for Elisha’s help and is honest about the fact that she has only a small jar of oil. The situation seems impossible.
People cry out to God for help throughout Scripture. We have a God who sees, hears and cares about our needs. When a blind man cries out to Jesus for mercy, Jesus asks what the man wants. The blind man boldly asks for his sight, and Jesus heals him (Luke 18:35-43). A recurring theme throughout the Bible is God’s open invitation to bring our needs to him. Prayer is a conversation with God and a powerful gift. Because of Jesus, we can “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
TODAY: Jesus desires to fill us with his love, joy, peace, patience and power through his Holy Spirit. But do we ask and keep asking for those things? Admit your need to God today and make a bold request, trusting him no matter the outcome. “God, I need ____________________. I believe you help in times of need. This is where I need your help. I love and trust you. Amen.”
