March 13|Closing the Gap Series
She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 2 Kings 4:5
Read: 2 Kings 4:3-7
Listen: 2 Kings 4
Elisha gives the widow strange directions. He tells her to ask all her neighbors for their empty jars. Then she is to shut her door and, with her sons, start pouring the small amount of oil she has into all the jars. Elisha’s role as a prophet is a gift from God to show the people who God is and how to follow him. This woman doesn’t waffle, debate or delay. She decisively acts to obey the prophet’s clear directions.
When we are stuck in a gap, obediently following God’s Word is significant. When we’re unsure about what to do, God’s Word makes some things very clear. Scripture guides us to treat others as we want to be treated (Luke 6:31). We are to follow Jesus’s example of humility and place others above ourselves (Philippians 2:3-4). We must live obedient and holy lives because God is holy (1 Peter 1:14-15). God calls us to live with integrity (Proverbs 10:9). Following Jesus means obeying God in all things, not just when it makes sense or feels convenient. God fills our gaps and meets us as we act decisively in obedience.
TODAY: What step of obedience do you need to take? How can you begin to act decisively? Ask God to reveal the ways you’ve been halfhearted in following him or how you haven’t taken his Word seriously. Confess anything he reveals and ask for his strength to begin obeying today.
Read Zechariah 11. Highlight anything that points to Jesus. Note the shepherd imagery.
