READ Proverbs 29 (listen). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.
Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31
Read: Proverbs 15:31
Listen: Proverbs 15
Solomon wished to “give prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young” (Proverbs 1:4). Solomon was giving this instruction to the aristocrats of Israel. His audience may have included the children of those in the royal court, the sons of wealthy landowners, or the next generation of national leaders. We would call them “the movers-and-shakers” or “influencers”. Possibly believing they knew it all and had it all together, it wouldn’t have been easy for those listening to pay attention. They needed humility.
Solomon challenges them to “heed” the “life-giving correction” he offers. We also see this in today’s reading for The Wisdom Challenge, “Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction” (Proverbs 29:18). Solomon knew it wasn’t easy to receive instruction. It’s why he continually calls them to it.
Watch this video clip as Pastor Aaron Buer reminds us that humility is a key to wisdom. It was true for Solomon’s audience and true for us. When we admit we don’t have this, can’t handle it or need help— only then are we open to correction. By saying “thank you” to what we hear, we demonstrate humility and a willingness to consider the wisdom given seriously.
Pray a prayer of humility similar to this, “Heavenly Father, I know I need to listen to heed the correction of others in the area of ____________. For too long, I have known what to do, but I’ve ignored their life-giving correction. For that, I am sorry and confess it before you. Please give me the humility, wisdom and strength I need as I move to honor you in this area. Amen.”
