What Are You Discussing?

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Two men walk out of Jerusalem. To say the last few days have been eventful would be an understatement. The country of Israel had just celebrated Passover—the largest religious festival of the year. Most of the people in the country made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There probably were bustling ad hoc camps all around the city. To top it off, the religious elite had Jesus arrested, tried, convicted and executed. Strange things happened during the execution—darkness in the middle of the day, earthquakes and even dead people came back to life.

These two men walk out of Jerusalem, on their way to Emmaus, with all these events swirling in their heads. Imagine the conversation. They likely discussed what they heard about the trial and crucifixion, and where they were when the sky went dark. Maybe they even talked about seeing a dead person who had come back to life. As they walk and talk, a stranger comes along and joins the conversation. They don’t know it, but the stranger is Jesus himself. The interaction between Jesus and his two followers gives us an incredible image of Jesus longing to meet us at our point of need, assuring us in our moments of doubt and encouraging us to share our hope.

Consider where you are in your journey with Jesus. Answer the following questions in your journal: What have you experienced recently? What questions do you have concerning Jesus right now? What doubts are you struggling with? Who do you know that needs hope? Ask God to meet you this week as you reflect on this story.
