In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:19
Read: 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Listen: 1 Timothy 6
Paul talks about future rewards when he writes to rich Jesus-followers in the Ephesian church. He says that they can take hold of the life that is truly life through serving and sharing. God has something bigger and better for them. Something more than a life driven by money, leisure and power. Paul calls this a “life that is truly life.”
The same is true for us. We can easily let our time and money grip our heart. We might think, “I have given my life to Christ, but that doesn’t include my time or money.” Paul would tell us that this is not truly life. God has something bigger, better and longer lasting than anything our money can buy.
We sang a song this past week weekend called “Build My Life.” The lyrics include, “I will build my life upon your love, it is a firm foundation, I will trust in you alone and I will not be shaken.” As we seek contentment in an affluent society, let these words be a reminder. God wants more for us than a life built on money or stuff. When we use our gifts to serve and share—it brings God delight and moves us toward a life that is truly life.
Watch this video from our worship of “Build My Life.” As you watch or sing along, allow these words to be your prayer today. May you build your life on the foundation of Jesus Christ.
Join us this year as we read through the New Testament.
Today’s reading is Matthew 25.
