TODAY’S MESSAGE

Unlikely allies to say the least, Pharisees and Herodians approach Jesus to ask the first question. The Pharisees support a strict adherence to the Jewish law as they despise and reject all Roman rule and authority. The Herodians were committed to keeping Herod on the throne as only a slightly better alternative than the Romans. The religious Pharisees and political Herodians finally agree on something—getting rid of Jesus.

Their question is about the hated poll tax. A constant source of irritation and frustration for the Jews, this tax is so despised it gives rise to at least two political revolts. Their question, “Is it right to pay the imperial tax or not?” is a blatant attempt to catch Jesus in a “lose-lose” situation. If he says, “No,” the Romans will carry him off. If he says, “Yes,” he risks losing the support of the people. The choice appears to be a loss of popularity or death.

But Jesus masterfully turns it around. Watch this video clip as Pastor Jeff Manion explains how Jesus is the reminder of God’s authority over every person as those who bear his image (Genesis 1:27). Because God placed his image on us, he deserves to have us. As image-bearers of Creator God, we are responsible to reflect him in all we do.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Remind yourself whose image you bear by selecting a large coin (quarter or half dollar). Place it in a prominent location (in your pocket or on your desk) where you will see and touch it frequently. Use this as a reminder that you bear the image of the God who made you—and give yourself entirely to him again today.
